Francisco de Orellana was a 16th century Spanish conquistador of the Americas. He is most famous for being the first European to explore the Amazon river, descending it from present-day Ecuador to the Atlantic. During his voyage, he encountered a sophisticated Indian society, which the archeological record begins to reveal. He died in the Amazon, in his second expedition, never having found his dreamed El Dorado.
